Free, yes, Independence and Ingenuity

Dearest Taya,

I’ve been pondering our neighbors to the north. I’ve had some brief correspondence with the house of Windsor and I often forget: the tragedy of losing the Princess Diana was a circus selling great advert space and broadcasting something private, while subjects may have felt a kind of loss an American can’t fathom and looking up to the Oak leaf that had been independent since her children’s birth may’ve gained a perspective on national compromise, sacrifice, legal, geographical, and tax minuatae (sic) that would not been conducive to revenue, but education and international empathy.

What does it mean, independent? When not from bloodshed as our own birth
